Why Wood?

Wood boats are few and far between. Most boats you see today are fiberglass or aluminum. Although these materials have great benefits, they all start to look alike. Kind of like a new housing division being built, they are actually different but have the same (or similar) look. This is not true with wood boats. Because every piece is cut and installed by hand, every boat looks different. By using different types of wood, several boats can have similar shape but very different character. That is what attracted us to wood boats. There is also pride and confidence of owning and using a wood boat built by hand. You know just by looking at it that each piece was put in by hand and could not have been built in some factory where blemishes and defects can easily slip through.

If you are interested in building your own boat, here are some great books to read - "Go Build Your Own Boat!" by Harold H. 'Dynamite' Payson, "Boatbuilding With Plywood" by Glenn L. Witt. You may also visit Glen-L who offers "boat plans, patterns, and kits for the amateur boat builder."
